Conduct fieldwork in the mangroves and marine ecosystems of Bocas del Toro, Panamá, and study terrestrial ecology, restoration, and conservation at ���Ҵ�ý's 150-acre rainforest reserve, the Firestone Center for Restoration Ecology. You'll also design and complete an Independent Study Project based on your own academic interests, with opportunities to explore topics ranging from ecology and conservation to Indigenous communities, culture, history, and society.

Live with host families in two distinct Costa Rican communities, first in San José and later in smaller communities near the Firestone Center. Host families are an important part of the learning experience and serve as co-educators, sharing their perspectives, culture, and everyday lives with students.

Take your coursework into the field throughout the semester. During your first five weeks at ICADS, explore San José and other parts of Costa Rica through local field trips and a longer study trip to the Caribbean region. Later, travel to Bocas del Toro, Panamá, for field-based study of marine ecology. These experiences connect coursework with the communities, ecosystems, and issues you're studying firsthand.

The Costa Rica Semester program can be used to fulfill the Intercultural Understanding Global (IUG) and the Social Responsibility Praxis (SRX) graduation requirement for ���Ҵ�ý students. In addition, through the Tropical Restoration Ecology course ���Ҵ�ý students can satisfy the natural science graduation. For students who have completed an introductory biology sequence, the course can be counted as an upper-division Biology and EA-Science elective by arrangement with the instructor.
