“Students see a system where almost everyone has access to care and understands their role in supporting it... That sense that ‘we’re all in this together’ is a powerful lesson—one that students carry with them long after they return.â€

The ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ in Costa Rica Summer Health Program begins on campus during the spring semester with a half-course introducing you to Costa Rica, epidemiology, and key public health concepts. You then take that foundation to Costa Rica for six weeks of intensive Spanish language study, coursework on health and health care, a health-focused internship, and life with a host family.

The program is particularly well suited for students interested in public health, pre-health fields, sociology, psychology, biology, Spanish, and Latin American Studies. You'll examine health and health care from both academic and community perspectives while developing the language and intercultural skills to better understand the Costa Rican context.

The ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Program Advantage

Community Engagement & Intensive Internship

Connect your study of public health with hands-on experience through an intensive internship with a local health or community organization. Depending on the placement, students may work alongside health professionals and community organizations in areas such as health outreach, nutrition, clinical care, and community health.

Homestay

Live with a host family in San José throughout the six-week program. Your homestay provides daily opportunities to practice Spanish, build relationships, and experience Costa Rican family and community life beyond the classroom.

Study Trips & Excursions

Visit public primary health care centers and a private hospital, learn with a community organization working with immigrant and marginalized communities, and explore connections among health, environment, agriculture, and rural development in Providencia de Dota. A longer study trip to Limón examines how development, monoculture, cultural diversity, environmental conditions, and Indigenous communities intersect with health and access to care.

Spend six weeks in San José, Costa Rica's capital and the center of the country's public health system. Your classes, homestay, and internship are based in the metropolitan area, giving you the opportunity to experience everyday life in Costa Rica while studying health and health care in context.

From San José, field visits and study trips take you to other parts of the country, including rural communities and the Caribbean region, where you'll examine how geography, environment, culture, and socioeconomic conditions shape health and access to care.
