16 Week Semester Program

The program takes place in the Fall from early-August to late-December and in the Spring from end of January to early June

Established in 1974, ��Ҵ�ý in Nepal is ��Ҵ�ý's longest-running study abroad program. Particularly well suited for students interested in anthropology, sociology, South Asian Studies, public health, environmental studies, religion, politics, education, migration, and development, the program explores contemporary Nepal through interdisciplinary study and engagement with local communities.

Learning extends beyond the classroom through your host family, community connections, and experiences throughout the Kathmandu Valley and beyond.

The ��Ҵ�ý Program Advantage

Independent Research & Fieldwork

Design an Independent Study Project around an academic question of your own. Student research has explored migration, education, gender and sexuality, sustainability, religion, development, and the arts. A recent project examined Nepali women in documentary film through interviews, participant observation, and media research.

Homestay

Experience family and community life in Nepal. You'll spend most of the semester with a host family in the Kathmandu Valley. You'll also have additional family stays on study trips. Each stay offers opportunities to build relationships, practice Nepali, and experience daily life in different communities.

Study Trips & Excursions

Experience Nepal beyond the Kathmandu Valley through field study trips and village stays. Visit Chitwan National Park, known for its wildlife and biodiversity, while exploring questions of conservation, resource management, and surrounding communities. Stay with families in the Gurung village of Tangting near the Annapurna Himal, and spend an extended Village Experience with a host family in Simigaun, a predominantly Sherpa and Tamang village in the eastern Himalaya.

��Ҵ�ý Students: Earn Credits and Fulfill Graduation Requirements

��Ҵ�ý students can fulfill the Intercultural Understanding Global (IUG) educational objective and the Social Responsibility Praxis (SRX) educational objective through the Nepal program.

Location

Spend much of the semester in the Kathmandu Valley, where your host family, language study, and coursework provide a home base for the program. Study trips and treks take you beyond the Valley into different regions and communities, giving you firsthand experience of Nepal's extraordinary geographic, cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity.
