"Engaging in education with incarcerated students has a powerful impact on everyone involved...It transforms how people think about justice, opportunity, and the role of education in people’s lives.

2018 Year the Justice Education Center was established at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½

History

was founded in 2018 and is supported by a multi-year $1.1 million Mellon Foundation Grant awarded to ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ in 2019.

The center provides transformative education pathways, policy advocacy, and reintegration support for incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and non-incarcerated students. Its mission is composed of five pillars of focus:

Justice Education Center Programs

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program is an educational program with an innovative pedagogical approach tailored to facilitate dialogue across difference. It originated by Lori Pompa at Temple University as a means of bringing together campus-based students with incarcerated students for a semester-long course held in a prison, jail or other correctional setting.

While those core Inside-Out Prison Exchange courses have been replicated across the United States and in multiple countries since its inception in 1997, the program has expanded into a variety of other forms of educational and community-based programming. It also has grown into an international network of trained faculty, students, alumni, think tanks, higher education and correctional administrators, and other stakeholders actively engaged with, and deeply committed to, social justice issues.

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Pathway to BA is the first of its kind.

In 2020, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ launched its Inside-Out Pathway-to-BA program, becoming the first undergraduate institution in the U.S. to transform the Inside-Out curriculum into a program that leads to a BA degree for incarcerated learners. Students work toward earning degrees in organizational studies, an interdisciplinary course of study focusing on administrative, economic, political, psychological, and sociological factors.

As of 2026, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½'s Inside-Out Pathway-to-BA program has graduated 5 cohorts of students.

“The outside students were the most essential part (of the program). Without them, we were stagnant. They were a catalyst, allowing those of us inside to open up and express ourselves in ways we couldn’t have otherwise.
